Beco Butterfly Product Recall

If used improperly, the Beco Butterfly produced and sold during January thru February 2008 can present a fall hazard. The tension buckles on the insert can loosen if held at an angle, and allow the webbing supporting the baby to slip through.

Below is an image showing the right and wrong ways to handle the carrier.
However, since even wearers *aware* of this issue often grab the carrier in a hurry when putting it on, and the margin of error is fairly small, and user error is still possible, I advise all my customers to avoid the risk and STOP USING THE CURRENT BUTTERFLY.

I know this is a big inconvenience for many of you. I'm sorry. Here are your options:

  • RETROFIT

Send in your carrier for a free postage-paid retrofit.
Please download and print the Retrofit Form and send it in with your carrier. Beco plans to have your carrier back to you within two weeks.

How will this issue be fixed by the retrofit?

Future Beco Butterflies and retrofitted current models will have a design change in the buckles to prevent webbing slippage. The new buckles are designed by Duraflex, and have 3 slots where the webbing is fed through instead of 2, making it much harder for slipping to occur.

Once the webbing is threaded, it does not need to be removed. You will need to pull harder (about 3 times as hard) than the current buckles to get the webbing to move. These new buckles actually eliminate a step, making the Butterfly easier to use, since there will be no need to feed the buckle and excess webbing under the safety loops.

  • EXCHANGE
Return your Butterfly to me in exchange for a Pikkolo, which is a very durable, safe carrier that is my personal favorite. If you have a child 18mos or older, you might also consider the Patapum Toddler Carrier.
