Do you really need to buy so many beds?

Crib, co-sleeper, toddler bed, twin bed. Do you really need to spend so much money buying all these different beds?

I don't think so. Consider the concept of a toddler bed. Why not just get a bed that the child can use for more than oh, 3-4 years before it becomes outgrown? Does a toddler really need a small toddler-sized bed? After all, it's not like anyone ever said, "Oh, I need a *smaller* bed in order to get a good night's sleep". Why not just get a larger bed to start with?

Personally, I think the toddler bed is a marketing ploy. Why not just move to a double bed once the crib is outgrown, if you have the space? Or hello, at least a twin. But a toddler bed? Bah. Ridiculous.

Most parents spend at least SOME time laying down in bed with their children, even if they don't co-sleep. A bad dream, an illness, the other parent out of town...you might as well get a bed that is big enough for both you and your child to lie down in comfortably, and not be constantly teetering on the edge of a tiny, rickety bed.

My kids both have queen beds. I started off just not wanting to get rid of a newly purchased guest bed when pregnant, then ended up sleeping there with my new baby, and finally him sleeping there by himself. Worked out so well that I purposely bought a queen bed for the second baby. We all like sleeping in big comfy beds. I don't have to worry about getting kids out of my bed, because they are always in their own beds. *Their* beds are the family beds, where moms, dads, babies and dogs all intermingle.

It wasn't too long ago that people would pass beds down through generations. Now, the toddler bed, made to last 2-4 years. What will marketers think up next?
