How do you protect your baby from the sun when riding in a carrier?

Generally the only areas that are exposed on a child in a baby carrier wearing a sunhat are the lower arms and the top of the thighs and feet.

My son and I are both very fair-skinned, blonde, blue-eyed, prone to freckling, the works. Typically I have him wear a long-sleeved shirt, then I put sunblock on his hands. If it's really hot, then he wears a short-sleeved shirt and I sunblock his arms. If he is wearing shorts, then I put sunblock on his legs from mid-thigh down.

Since a worn baby is held so close to your body though, the sun exposure is quite minimal. And those sunhats really do the trick. My son has not once been sunburned while riding on my back, even on long hikes for several hours at midday.

A good sunscreen is crucial. Most sunscreens currently sold in the US start to lose their sun-protective abilities after about an hour. And no one stops to apply new sunscreen everywhere every hour!

The most effective sunscreens are the "Anthelios" brand from La Roche Posay/Loreal. They use a combination of Mexoryl-SX and titanium dioxide. They are not currently available in the US, but you can buy them online from Canadian pharmacies. They are very safe, very effective, and very gentle on the skin.

I buy mine here:

I use Anthelios "L" Crème SPF 60 on most occasions. If you are going to be in the water at all, then the "S" Crème SPF 30 is the water-resistant version.

They also have special Ombrelle formulations for kids, but I prefer the higher SPF Anthelios brand, as it is more effective. My son and I both have very sensitive skin as well, and have never had any problems with it.

Thank you for sharing which sunblock you use.
The Anthelios is now available with XL. The Ombrelle for kids, for sensitive skin is an excellent sunscreen. As you mentionned, it only starts breaking down when you are exposed to the sun. Even though the Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL are photostable, it is always a good idea to reapply every 2 hours when exposed to the sun.

I got the new Anthelios XL with Mexoryl XL at the same website:
